What’s On in Year Five
Term One 2018
Welcome to Grade 5 in 2018.
We are thrilled to be starting a new and exciting year filled with fantastic learning opportunities.
Our camp is held at Grantville Lodge, Phillip Island and consists of a 4 day outdoor education program running from February 13th to February 16th 2018.
The Year 5’s will also be involved in a week’s intensive Bike Education program starting Monday the 26th of February until Thursday Thursday 1st March. Students will learn road and safety awareness, helmet and bike care, riding skills, as well as on-road practical experiences. The week will culminate in a bike ride to Gasworks Park in Port Melbourne on Friday 2nd March. We welcome parent participation and support in this program.
Our major writing focus for Term One will be persuasive texts.
Our regular Literacy program will incorporate sessions focusing on spelling, sentence structure, grammar, comprehension and fluency skills.
We will also be using the CAFÉ Reading approach to teach reading comprehension and enhance reading skills, whereby students will be involved in setting their own reading goals, reading with peers and regularly conferencing with their teacher about their progress.
The on-going maths program will extend understanding of the place value of whole numbers and incorporate mental computation practice. There will also be a focus on the four processes in maths throughout the term.
Our Inquiry unit of study will focus on the well-being of every individual, bearing in mind that mental, emotional and physical health is the key to a successful life.
BYOD is incorporated into our daily program as a tool to enhance learning and students are required to bring their devices to school fully charged each day.
We look forward to a great term and encourage you all to support and embrace the programs and activities in Year 5.
