What’s On in Year Five

Term One 2022

Welcome to Year 5 in 2022.

We are thrilled to be starting a new and exciting year filled with fantastic learning opportunities.

Our Outdoor Education Camp is held at Grantville Lodge, near Phillip Island from Tuesday 15th February to Friday 18th February. The four-day program offers a wide range of activities including surfing, boogie boarding, canoeing, giant swing, flying fox and high and low ropes initiative courses that enhance co-operation, teamwork and personal development.

The Year 5’s will also participate in a week’s intensive Bike Education program starting Monday 28th March until Thursday 31st March. Students will learn road and safety awareness, helmet and bike care, riding skills, as well as on-road practical experiences. The week will culminate in a bike ride to Gasworks Park in Port Melbourne on Friday 1st April. We welcome parent participation and support during this program.

Our major writing focus for Term One will be narratives and persuasive texts.

Our regular English program will incorporate sessions focusing on spelling, sentence structure, grammar, comprehension and fluency skills.

We will also be using the CAFÉ Reading approach to teach reading comprehension and enhance reading skills, whereby students will be involved in setting their own reading goals and reading with peers. It is expected that students read for at least 20 minutes daily.

The maths program will extend understanding of the place value of whole numbers and incorporate mental computation practice. There will also be a focus on the four processes in maths throughout the term. Students will work in Maths Clinic groups based on their ability.

Our Inquiry Unit of study will focus on the well-being of every individual, bearing in mind that mental, emotional and physical health is the key to a successful life.

The Sports program will be held on Tuesday afternoons. The students will participate in various activities and games, the aim of which is to increase all students’ fitness through regular physical activity and promote healthy lifestyles as part of our health unit this term.

BYOD is incorporated into our daily program as a tool to enhance learning and students are required to bring their devices to school fully charged each day. Homework tasks will be given weekly and available on Google Classroom. It is expected that all tasks set are completed within the given time frame.

We look forward to a great term and encourage you all to support and embrace the programs and activities in Year 5.

Aviva Cohen, Nancy Merrick, Chris Yianni and Cara Willis.
